A number of magnificent cherry trees stand in the Innovation Center, which is in full bloom in the spring and is very popular with the neighbors. It has become a custom to take a picture with the cherry trees in the background at plant awards for long service and initiation ceremonies.
However, as the cherry blossoms fall in large numbers around our center, we clean the petals off the premises as part of our CSR activities.
We carried out In-Place Protection (IPP) training and drill to ensure members know what to do when there is accidental release of hazardous/toxic gas in the workplace (stay indoors, seal-up doors and windows, check IPP kits, etc.) .
For the first time in three years, a hands-on emergency response drill was held in which all plant employees participated. (This training was held in the form of lectures in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19.)
In addition to reconfirming our emergency response procedures and evacuation routes, we improved our disaster prevention skills and raised awareness of disaster prevention.
Singapore has a mild climate and a lot of rain, so the gutters are often clogged with fallen leaves. As a result, the slow flow of water creates an environment for mosquitoes to thrive, which can lead to infections such as dengue fever. Every weekend, employees from the South Plant remove leaves stuck in the gutters to reduce mosquito infestations and protect employees and local residents.
Japanese class held on April 10, 2023. As a pro-Japanese country, Vietnam is one country where the people are keen to study Japanese and we actively provide support to motivated employees. We also have human resource exchanges between Japan and Vietnam, with two employees who took Japanese classes working as engineers at Denka's Chiba Plant.
Forklifts are essential work tools for everyday operations, but the large number of accidents is also an issue. Training was given to all forklift operators, with new operators improving their driving skills and experienced operators taking the opportunity to reflect on their daily operations. With an even higher level of safety awareness, we will strive to prevent work-related accidents caused by forklifts.
Malaysia is a typical multi-ethnic country, with ethnic groups such as Malay, Chinese and Indian, and other indigenous peoples.
Each ethnic group respects each other's religion and way of life, living together while preserving their own culture and traditions, such as their own language, religion, lifestyle, ethnic costume and diet.
All company employees came together for this event to respect our respective cultures and shared Buka Puasa (a meal after fasting).
In Malay, "Gotong Royong" means mutual assistance.
This was a team-building exercise in which company employees came together to clean the plant and the neighboring area.
To raise employee awareness of disaster prevention, training was conducted on how to report a fire, evacuate employees, and use fire extinguishers.
We use a range of flammable, hazardous chemicals in our research, and all of our researchers attended an off-site hazardous chemical safety training course. Participants were required to take a test at the end of the course to further their understanding of handling hazardous chemicals.
During National Day (Oct 1-9), COVID-19 forced us to refrain from returning to our hometowns or traveling, etc. However, as part of efforts to maintain good health and improve communication, a walking competition was held by members of the office. Blessed with fine weather, a good sweat, and smiles on the faces of children, it was a very meaningful holiday.
March 8 falls on Women's Day (a holiday for adult women) in China. On the day, all employees were presented with a variety of daily necessities as a token of appreciation.
In conjunction with Safety Production Month (June every year), we held a safety quiz competition to improve our knowledge of safety and workplace communication. It was an opportunity to learn and socialize while also having a good time, answering quizzes on safety laws and regulations, workplace rules, etc., and practicing CPR using human models and AEDs.

Icon Genetics is a member of a cooperative network of life sciences organizations (BMD GmbH) in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, and has worked to further exchanges with academia and industry. We also maintain connections with many scientific and non-scientific organizations, including the German National Academy of Sciences, Leopoldina. On October 12, 2022, Manager, Dr. Franziska Jarczowski gave an oral presentation on "magnICON® - the leading platform for in-plant production of norovirus vaccines etc." at the World Vaccine Congress Europe in Barcelona, Spain. On October 24, Managing Director, Dr. Victor Klimyuk spoke at the BIO-Europe conference in Leipzig, Germany on the topic of "Personalized therapeutic and preventive vaccine candidates made from plants: a case study." Furthermore, on November 29, Manager, Dr. Frank Thieme, gave an oral presentation on "magnICON ® - the leading platform for in-plant production of norovirus vaccines etc." at the Vaccines Europe Congress in Berlin, Germany. On March 29, 2023, a seminar on "Plant-based protein production and drug development" was held for local students who toured the facility.
We adhere strictly to national requirements for the disposal of chemical and potential biohazard waste. Our compliance with national regulations and requirements is regularly inspected by local authorities, and to date we have not violated any high standard requirements. This has earned us a strong reputation and the trust of the local community.
Regular meetings are held to guide all our employees in meeting biosafety and operational safety requirements. Our facility operates under biosafety level 1 (S1) requirements in accordance with German regulations (Gentechnikgesetz). We have an established standard operating procedures (SOP) and quality assurance systems (QA) for GMP production to ensure product quality in line with national and international requirements. To maintain this framework, company employees have participated in many external training and education courses. Employee training on aspects of data protection has also been conducted each year by an external data protection officer.
On December 14 we invited the Takasaki-kita Fire Department to assist us with our firefighting drill. This was the first time in two years we have been able to hold the drill due to postponement as a result of COVID-19. On this occasion, our goal was to quickly carry out the initial actions from the start of the disaster to extinguishing the fire, and participants went through a series of pre-training exercises before the event. We received compliments from the fire department for our quick response, which will serve to encourage us in our future firefighting activities.
We are actively involved in a variety of community activities. On July 27, the Society for the Beautification of Waterways in the City of Maizuru held a clean-up activity along the Isazu River, which runs alongside the plant. We will continue to participate and contribute to the maintenance of this beautiful city.
In the morning of the competition, a comprehensive disaster drill focusing on a nitric acid leak and drills on handling fire extinguishers were conducted together with the Hanamaki Fire Department, and in the afternoon, a risk source identification exercise was conducted as a basis for risk assessment. The Hanamaki Fire Department commented that this was the first time they had participated in a drill simulating a chemical leak and was a good experience for them and that our drills were well conducted.
The audit consisted of compliance, management, safety, and quality checks followed by a plant inspection. In addition to good points, there were also suggestions for areas that could be improved with examples and experiences from other offices used as a reference point. We will use this information to continue to make improvements.
With the support of the Komatsu Morioka Branch, we conducted a forklift safety workshop and driving practice in the morning of the competition, an evacuation and firefighting drill in the afternoon, which was followed by equipment maintenance training (basics of vibration/lubricant) given by Mr. Takeda from the Engineering Department at head office. Personnel from Komatsu provided a demonstration on proper forklift operation, which proved helpful in terms of conducting checks prior to operation and ensuring to conduct safety checks.
With Azumin provided by Denka Azumin, we worked to prepared the flower beds on May 29 and on June 5 a large number of local residents gathered to help plant the flowers. Due to COVID-19 there were no children in attendance this year so the residents were given the sweets we had prepared to take home with them. Beautiful flowers bloomed for a long period of time again this year, delighting the eyes of passengers.
On April 23, 2023, Denka Astec offered the grounds of the Kasai Plant to a local dog sports organization/KLCC Kansai Lure Coursing Club for a dog sports event. The organization regularly holds events on our grounds for dog sport/lure coursing, a sport in which dogs compete to see how many seconds they can run a set distance in pursuit of a lure, or imitation bait, to capture it.
The dogs ran energetically under the blue sky, and neighboring residents came to watch and have a good time.
Firefighters were invited to visit the facility to provide safety education and training together with firefighting drills with practical guidance. By making employees aware of what to do in an emergency, it contributes not only to the safety of the company, but also to the safety of the development zone.
The "Career Festival Itoigawa 2023" was held for approximately 320 third-year students from four junior high schools in Itoigawa City (Itoigawa, Itoigawa Higashi, Nou, and Omi Junior High Schools), as well as students from Hisui no Sato Special Support School's junior high division. Hosted by the Itoigawa City Board of Education, this event, which launched in 2020 and was held for the fourth time this year, aims to create opportunities for students to "have dialogue with adults living in the community" and "think about their future" in order to develop the "ability to engage" and "ability to dream" necessary for realizing their own unique lifestyles. This year, 52 companies participated, including our company. We exhibited products manufactured at the Omi Plant and explained Denka's environmental philosophy to the students, providing a valuable experience of engaging with local junior high school students. We will continue to actively participate in regional events to contribute to the community.
